If you have plans to learn dance then nothing is better than starting off with tango lessons. Tango Dance Lessons NYC has something to offer to every learner irrespective if he/she is a novice or professional. Tango is a dance style that was created by mixing steps from three different dance styles – Cuban habanera, Uruguayan candombe and milonga. This dance is performed on the beats of tango music, which is believed to have beats of European music and African tempo. Later, the salon music became a popular rhythm for the tango dance.

Although, the Argentine tango that originated from Argentina and Uruguay is popular nowadays, many tango styles have also been traced back to Cuba and Spain. Tango dance reached ballrooms at the start of the 20th century through the Teatro Opera. It also came to be known as ballroom tango as it had a few modified steps to match up with the ballroom norms. During 1903-1910, many gramophone records were sold that contained only tango music and tango sheet music. Tango became a rage among many places such as London, Berlin and Paris. At the end of 1913, tango hit New York and Finland. Just like waltz, this dance form surprised many dance lovers as close dancing was still not considered to be good.

However, the ballroom tango lost its significance to many new dance styles like Samba and Foxtrot. But, with the emergence of Argentine tango, this dance form managed to bring itself back on the dance circuit again. Tango dance lessons are quite easy to learn and practice. With every passing day, there will be improvement in style, posture and moves.

Two topics that need airing -
Dance Brolly - Oh dear!! where have you gone Val B and can you get back soon.....puleeeese! for years we had important and groundbreaking companies that you personally brought over and teased, cajoled, carefully polishing their high maintenance and fragile conceptual egos and in the case of certain curly headed Brooklyn based mavericks keeping just sober enough to prise onstage at the appointed hour - Now we have singularly the dullest programme of dance non events I have ever seen - of all the usual UK suspects, already legends in a Place lunchtime or at least BIG in a Greenwich one and Trisha Boring who has been wined, dined and NEA'd so far up the whazoo that frankly she is utterly, utterly threadbare and .......of course let's wheel out Now THATS What I Call Contemporary Dance 101 - that old favourite of the been there and really don't need to do it again - Merce Cunningham Co.....
Talk about mission creep - the Brolly office now sports no less than 14 admin staff - NOT ONE OF THEM A BLOODY DANCER!!!! - not to mention that's more than most of the companies they are bringing to our breathless attention - and not a whiff of genuine vision ANYWHERE to be seen! - shurely shome mishtake?

2nd moan - Ailey company members are giving a series of masterclasses at Danceworks - seems that it is the first the dreadful DWORKS have heard of it - on a whim i called to check - seems the reception staff have NO idea what Horton IS! let alone why it should be important for professional dancers to get their shapely butts down to Balderton Street and cut themselves a slice - it's all going to hell in a handcart this fall............

DISGO

”It's as if we've been transported to some nocturnal ritual in ancient Sparta... curiously alluring, intriguing and weirdly enjoyable...” Luke Jennings, The Observer

Following its hit Spring tour, Fleur Darkin Company returns to Laban Theatre to present the second season of DISGO. This intimate, un-intrusive piece creates new and closer proximities between performer and audience. DISGO is a different experience for everyone. The centre of DISGO is within the individual experiencing it. “One of the more overtly theatrical of the new wave British choreographers” (The Observer), Fleur Darkin merges her company of powerful dancers with the audience to create a riot of choreography. Experience a unique intimacy with the performers as they dance this rawly submerged new work.

The ticket to this show is an invitation to come and play.

Tue 28 Sept 19.30h
Nicola Conibere
Count Two

Augusto Corrieri
Quartet (for Anna Akhmatova)

This double bill brings together two playful and thought-provoking works that suggest theatre takes place as much in the minds of spectators as it does on stage.
Based on an accident that took place at La Scala, Italy, in 1913, Quartet presents four basic components - movements, objects, music, and words - performed in isolation, one after the other, inviting the audience to imagine and piece together the solo performance. In Count Two six performers playfully depict a series of recognisable actions and images within a shifting spectacular framework. Through replication, repetition and re-categorisation, the values we might associate with these moments are unsettled in a lively process of evoking and shifting meaning.

The Open University will be holding its 19th Contemporary Dance Summer School on Aug 19-22 at the recently refurbished and renamed Hub Theatre, Walton Park Campus. Four exciting days of dance with four different dancers, Delphine Gaborit, who taught a really enjoyable day in 2008, Kate Mason, Joanne Fong and Jih-Wen Yeh, whose Chinese technique class will ensure that this year’s programme will provide a range of styles, approaches and experiences. Something for everyone.

As usual, each day will begin with a technique class, leading into creative work and finishing with a sharing of the choreographed pieces.

More good news is that we’ve been able to hold our prices for this year and that the same discounts apply. £25 per day (£17 conc) and A £5 discount if booking for all four days. Remember you can book for any number of days, from just one to all four.

For more information and to enrol please contact Claire at claire@olneyarts.co.uk or tel: 01234 713112 or go to http://opendancegroup.awardspace.com

CarolLee on "Beautiful, compelling awful Crazy Joanna"

"BEAUTIFUL, compelling, awful - bring on the full length piece." was how Lindsey Clarke, Editor of Londonist described an excerpt of Crazy Joanna, (a full-length dance/film integrated piece on domestic abuse); performed at last weekend’s London Cloud Dance Festival by Leeds based Slanjayvah Danza.

Alongside 12 other contemporary dance companies, Slanjayvah's Dani Ferreira, Amir Giles and Jenni Wren performed a dance-only scene from Crazy Joanna set in the bordellos of Buenos Aires at the birth of the Tango. Knowing beforehand that the piece would have to compete with Slanjayvah’s last year’s hit ‘Blind Passion’ and that the domestic violence theme was going to have a strong impact, the response was overwhelmingly positive. Critic Debbie Shine described the piece as “Dark, disturbing, yet breathtakingly beautiful in the tender moments.” Lesley Perez wrote “A section of fierce partnering illustrating the abusive relationship was absolutely gripping.”

Suzanne Allen’s review stated, “A combination of beauty and tragedy, all the while a celebration of the survivors of domestic abuse, choreographer Jenni Wren and her collaborative dancers must be credited for their sensitive approach to this prevalent issue. A must see performance.” she continued, a sentiment echoed by Londondance critic Libby Costello’s “This taster of Crazy Joanna left me wanting to view the work in its entirety - let's hope this opportunity arises soon.”

The full work of Crazy Joanna is an integrated moving image and live dance performance and a short film taken from the Buenos Aires scene, very skilfully put together by Aurora Fearnley (Little Northern Light) has been entered into this year’s Virgin Shorts Film Competition. Judging is currently taking place and Slanjayvah is hopeful that Crazy Joanna will be chosen as one of 12 ‘shorts’ to be shown on 240 cinema screens nationwide.

Crazy Joanna entered into Virgin Media Shorts - A short film competition that champions new talent

PLEASE SUPPORT DANCE AND THE MOVING IMAGE BY VOTING FOR CRAZY JOANNA http://www.virginmediashorts.co.uk/films/entry/347087/crazy-joanna-3

The short film spectrum is dominated by formulaic and dialogue based stories, we would like dance to be accepted and eventually recognised as a form of narrative understood in film.

Aurora Fearnley (Little Northern Light) has very skilfully put together a short film taken from Scene 2 of Jenni Wren’s (Slanjayvah Danza) contemporary dance/film integrated work entitled ‘Crazy Joanna’.

"We really need your support and comments to help promote this film, especially to highlight that dance is an equally relevant form of storytelling in film."

Although we think the work speaks for itself, Virgin Media Shorts has given power to the people, and asks the great British public to view and comment on their favourite film (comment requires quick registration as a ‘critic’).

We are hopeful that Crazy Joanna will make it to the final stage where Virgin select 12 films to contend for the Grand Prize and The Peoples Choice.

“Passion is an unstoppable force". Narrated through dance and played out in the bordellos of backstreet Buenos Aires, Joanna trapped into selling her body, has to take desperate measures to escape.”

Further information on the full production and team can be found here http://www.slanjayvahdanza.com/en/productions/current-productions/crazy-jo/crazy-jo

Cloud Dance Festival is a thrice-yearly contemporary dance showcase, and we will be holding our summer festival on 16 - 18 July at Cochrane Theatre in Holborn.

We require experienced reviewers to cover one or two nights of this festival. Highlights will include Pair Dance, an excerpt of Slanjayvah Danza's new work 'Crazy Joanna', a triple-bill from Taciturn, Isadora Duncan dance from Julia Pond Dance, James Wilton, Sol Dans and more. Further details of the pieces can be found on our website www.cloud-dance-festival.org.uk

We do not have fixed word limits, but we would normally expect 1-2 paragraphs per company, as the reviews will be forwarded to each company for their feedback.

If you are interested, please send two sample reviews to info@cloud-dance-festival.org.uk, including your expected turnaround and any sites where you would be able to publish the reviews, if relevant.

DankDance - Bliss is Ignorance

An exciting, new Contemporary Dance Theatre Company, based in Hebden Bridge, has it's premiere performance as part of Hebden Bridge Arts Festival next week.

The first creation by this collective of artists is set in and around an old London Routemaster Bus.
The piece, made specifically for Hebden Bridge’s Fringe, explores the superficial perspectives of life and communities. From subtle, awkward body language to intense, physical conversation, its portrays the fickleness of success and the massive significance that the smallest decisions can have.

£12/£18 (concessions)

In The Process of... is a beautifully crafted new duet in which a man and woman negotiate a series of endings, rather than a single unfolding narrative leading to one inevitable finale. 60 wooden hoops dramatically help and hinder the couples relationship on stage - and even at times become the protagonists...

The piece draws upon Conlon Nancarrow's compositional structures and studies into the effect of film figure movement and genre recognition. Dimitriou attemptsw to weight the quality of the human body against the quality of the human body aganist the quality of the humman body aganist the quality of the humman bidy againist the quality of objects, sound, light and word. By manipulating movement parameters and playing with the myth of 'the quest', a play of two emweges as a series of intermezzos to a story never told.
